6 Bible Verses To Comfort A Broken Heart

When I was a teenager, I befriended a woman who was always hunched over. We eventually became close and she told me she was forced to carry huge sacks of wheat on her back as a little girl. She used to get tortured in unimaginable ways when she didn’t finish her work and bring home enough money. She never learned to walk straight after all those years of carrying such a heavy burden. My heart broken hearing her story.

Have you been silently carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders?

• Have you been silently enduring assaults from your significant other?
• Did you experience pain, trauma and violence in childhood?
• Were you sexually abused as a child or young adult?
• Are you mourning a loss due to abortion or miscarriage or maybe the death of a loved one or relationship?

My heart weeps for those suffering today. But there is hope and healing found in God’s Word!

Let me introduce you to the Widow of Nain

As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. Luke 7:12

This woman lost her husband and carried her dead son into the town where Jesus was standing at the gate. I can’t imagine the heaviness in her heart that day.

Did you know that Nain means green pastures? Green pastures symbolize abundance, sustenance and life. The widow of Nain had nothing that looked like green pastures in her life. There was only sorrow and pain.

Until she met Jesus.

Our God cares about your sorrows

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Luke 7:13

Jesus saw this woman His heart overflowed with compassion for her. Jesus spoke to her and said “DO NOT WEEP.”

Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” Luke 7:14

Jesus walked up to the widow of Nain and touched the bier (dead body). This is a big deal! No one did that. It signified defilement. But our Holy Lord touched the bier and brought her son back to life!

Tragedy, death, suffering. These are real and happen to all of us. It is healthy to weep and mourn when we undergo a broken heart. The loss we experienced may not be always brought back to life like the widow of Nain, but Jesus can comfort us and heal us during our sorrows.

God sees you when you are hurting. Jesus meets you in your pain. The Holy Spirit comforts your hurts.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.

1 Peter 5:7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Matthew 5:4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Psalm 56: 8 You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.

Psalm 119:50 Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles.

Psalm 61:2 From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety,
